Psalms – Resonance

This series of 12″x12″ paintings is a contemplation of ,and reaction to, Paul Simon’s 2023 music album and meditation on life, “Seven Psalms.” I have been deeply affected by this work and engaged in this painting project over the last two years to find a visual response and my own thinking about life and where I am now.

The album begins and ends with a gong, a sound that resonates long after the initial action. To me, the gong is an elemental sound that connects us with spiritualism, reflection, ritual, and community. In 1993, I went to Indonesia for the first time, meeting the choreographer, dancer, and artist Sardono Kusumo. I was introduced to the Javanese Gamelon (percussion orchestra) and helped to bring Sardono’s show “Passage through the Gong.” on to a U.S. and subsequent world tour. The gong in my painting is a Javanese gong, connecting my history to this album. – Clifton Taylor
